The city of Havana introduced street closures in some areas of the city on Monday in an effort to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

Barricades to limit access and control movement could be seen in the highly populated municipality of Centro Habana, among others.

Cuba is experiencing its highest number of people infected by COVID-19 to date with 5,046 positive cases in a week and a continuous incremental trend since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official reports.

Authorities have been tightening restrictions in an effort to stop the spread of the virus on the island, but the number of infected has not slowed.

Despite an intense public awareness campaign through local media, queues form outside stores in the Centro Habana commercial district without respecting social distancing rules.

Toughened economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration against Cuba, along with the worldwide pandemic, have affected supplies of goods and services in Cuba leading to long lines outside food stores.

The Cuban government continues prioritizing the advancement of its vaccine production in an effort to have residents across the country inoculated.

Soberana 02 is one of the four vaccine candidates being developed by Cuba.

There are hundreds of thousands of doses of the Soberana 02 being prepared to start vaccinating the island's population in March.

Official media showed images of the laboratories, certified by the World Health Organization, where the Soberana 02 vaccine is being produced.

Havana and Santiago de Cuba are the provinces with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country.

To date, Cuba has registered 45,361 cases and 300 deaths since March.
