European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday announced further measures to help farmers across the European Union amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The virus outbreak has had a major impact on the farming sector, with the collapse of some export markets and the closure of restaurants and food outlets.

The sector that relies heavily on migrant workers, and as more and more European Union countries have restricted or stopped crossings of their usually near-invisible borders, farmers cross the bloc have been left worried about how they will bring in their crops this year.

Von der Leyen thanked the thousands of volunteers who have come forward to help with this year's harvests, describing it as "a wonderful example of European solidarity."

She said more measures would be put in place to support farmers and ensure food supplies are not disrupted, including making it easier for farmers to access funds.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
