Esther Duflo is the youngest person and the second woman to win a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2019, along with husband Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer. When asked what she would do with the winnings of the prize, Duflo recalled how as a child she used to read stories about Marie Curie who was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and is the only woman to win it twice. Curie used her winnings to buy a gram of the element of radium, so Duflo said the trio will figure out what their 'gram of radium' is.
"We need to show younger people that economics is relevant to problems that they care about."

Woman can succeed
The Swedish Academy awarded Banerjee, Duflo, and Kremer for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. The 46-year-old Duflo, who was born in Paris, also said that receiving the prize has been “incredibly humbling”. The youngest Nobel Laureate further believes the award committee showed that it is possible for a woman to succeed and be acknowledged for her success. Duflo hopes to inspire other women to continue their hard work and other men to give them the respect that they deserve “like every single human being”.
"Showing that it is possible for a woman to succeed and be recognised for success I hope is going to inspire many, many other women to continue working and many other men to give them the respect they deserve."
