Financial Times appoints first woman editor in its 131 year history

In a first in its 131-year history, Financial Times has appointed Roula Khalaf as its first woman editor, on November 12. She will replace Lionel Barber

In a first in its 131-year history, Financial Times has appointed Roula Khalaf as its first woman editor, on November 12. Khalaf will be taking over from Lionel Barber who would be stepping down in January. Khalaf has been FT's deputy editor since 2016 and has previously served as the foreign editor responsible for leading a global network of more than 100 correspondents and pushing for greater diversity in the newsroom. She has also served as the Middle East editor. 

In an interview with an international media outlet, Khalaf said that its a great honour to be appointed as the editor of the FT. She further adds that she looks forward to building on Lionel Barber's extraordinary achievements. She also says that she is grateful for Baber's mentorship through the years. Khalaf will be joining Katherine Viner at the Guardian as one of the few women to edit major newspapers in Britain. Khalaf has also worked at Forbes magazine in New york.

Tsuneo Kita, the chairman of Nikkei, said that she is delighted that Khalaf has agreed to take the position of editor. She says that she has full confidence that Khalaf will continue the FT's mission to deliver quality journalism without fear and without favor, inspire and lead a team of the most talented journalists and pursue the FT's new agenda covering business, finance, economics, and world affairs. FT looks forward to working closely with her to deepen the global media alliance, she added.
