People in Mexico responded Friday to the announcement that the country has its first cases of the new coronavirus.

The government said there were two confirmed cases.

One was being treated at the National Institute for Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City, where the patient and his family were being kept in isolation.

Outside the hospital, people visiting for other illnesses waited to be admitted.

Most wore face masks.

"If we don't wear a face mask we will not be allowed inside," Juana Barboza Meza said. "We are patients, and logically we have to be more careful."

Local resident Concepción Orozco lives nearby, and he has to walk past the hospital regularly.

"One cannot walk safely through here," he says. "For my own safety I wear a face mask."
