French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire on Thursday said "very good progress" had been made in talks between the US and France over the taxation of digital giants such as Google, Amazon and Facebook.

The tax had come under criticism from the US who threatened to retaliate with sanctions, which could have led to a broader trade dispute between the US and the European Union, of which France is a part.

Speaking to the Associated Press at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Le Maire said: "There are many ways of taxing digital activities but that's good news that the US and France have agreed to work together to an international solution at the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)."

"I think that's good news for everybody," Le Maire said.

It's hoped the talks will dial down the risk of a wider trade war between the United States and the European Union.
