German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas said Sunday that the "seizure of power by the Taliban (in Afghanistan) is imminent."

Maas went on to confirm that "parts of the Afghan government are already abroad," and that the top priority for Germany was "the security of our nationals, of our staff in our Embassy, and equally of the people with whom we have worked in Afghanistan in recent years."

The FM went on to state that some personnel would be evacuated and German military planes will fly to Kabul overnight to support that operation.

"We are in close contact with the United States and other international partners and have agreed that we will provide mutual support with the evacuation measures in the coming days," Maas said, adding "we have helped others and we will likewise accept their help."

Germany's defense minister confirmed on Sunday that the first A400M military transport planes would depart Sunday night with rapid response forces on board to secure the operation.
