INCREDIBLE | Musician strums his guitar as doctors operate on his brain

In a strange request to a patient ahead of a brain surgery, doctors in South Africa asked a musician to play his guitar during the operation.

Musa Manzini, a jazz bassist, was awake and playing his guitar as the surgeons carried out the operation. A video footage from a local media shows the bassist play his acoustic guitar slowly as the surgery goes on.

The technique which is called as 'awake craniotomy' requires the musician to play during the surgery so the surgeons know they are probing in the wrong site, said a report. The procedure lets the surgeons to operate on the delicate areas of the brain.

According to the National Health Service, an 'awake craniotomy' is an operation which is "performed in the same manner as a conventional craniotomy but with the patient awake during the procedure. This is a preferred technique for operations to remove tumours close to, or involving functionally important (eloquent) regions of the brain".

Neurospecialists in the report said that since it was difficult to differentiate between the tumor and normal brain tissue, it is good to pick up the information on whether they are in the right area as the patient will indicate through his performance.

However, patients being asked to play an instrument is not a new phenomenon.

In India, as per reports, a Bangladesh guitarist Taskin Ali played the instrument as surgeons performed on his brain. Ali was diagnosed with focal hand dystonia, also called the musician's dystonia on his left hand. The doctors from Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital in Bengaluru, performed a procedure, called burning’ a set of ‘misbehaving and misfiring’ circuits in January 2018.

Prior to this, Abhishek Prasad, a 37-year-old guitarist, became the first patient in India to have undergone this procedure successfully.
