India hopeful new Lankan leader will safeguard its strategic interests

India hopeful that the next Sri Lankan President who is to be chosen in the Presidential elections to be held after 10 days has a cordial attitude towards it. The election is heating up as Mahinda Rajapaksa kin Gotabaya is pitched against non-controversial Sajith Premadasa. India awaits a leader which takes of strategic interests including disallowing any Chinese military assets and submarines in the island country. Concerns sparked when Rajapaksa said in one of his rallies that he plans to negotiate with China. The statement had so deep effect that it reached discussions at the highest levels. India also objects to any foreign power which builds on Sri Lanka's soil.

As per reports, India is ready to work with any power in Sri Lanka which safeguards its interests cordially.

India has kept a close watch on Sri Lanka

When China tried to make moves in Sri Lanka, India was closely watching it. In order to safeguard its strategic interests, India made efforts under the Sirisena government. It has also been alert about the terrorist networks linked to Tamil Nadu and its threats to Sri Lanka and Southern India. India mourned the Easter Sunday bombings which killed 250 in a day in 2018.

Most parties support Sajith Premadasa instead of Rajapaksha

On the other hand, workers of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga have denied their support to Former Defense Secretary Rajapaksha. A convention was held by the banner Organization to Protect the SLFP in Colombo and came to the decision to not support. Later they signed an agreement to support Premadasa. At the same time, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said the media, comparing the record of the previous government of Mahinda Rajapaksa with the current governance and examining the manifestos of the two candidates, the correct course of action would be to support Mr. Premadasa.
