The Jakarta regional government in Indonesia continued on Wednesday to bury its citizens who died from the coronavirus.

Families and friends flocked to the public cemetery in Pondok Rangoon, East Jakarta, where a special area was prepared for the bodies to be buried.

An ambulance carrying the bodies was greeted by a funeral officer who used improvised protective equipment.

Until noon local time, The Associated Press witnessed the burial of as many as eight bodies in a cemetery devoted to Muslims.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.

On Tuesday, Indonesia reported 1,528 cases of the virus and 136 deaths.

The first was first detected in central China in late December.
