Officials sprayed disinfectant in a suburb of Pakistan's capital Islamabad on Sunday where some cases of the new coronavirus have been identified.

All points of entry to the city have been cordoned off by police, and the military has been deployed to enforce checkpoints.

Federal health authorities in Pakistan have reported that the number of people testing positive for the new virus is increasing.

Pakistan now has 1,495 confirmed infections, with the recent death of a man in Karachi bringing the death toll from the new virus to 12.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
