Italy records another 756 virus deaths

Italy confirmed on Sunday that 756 more people have died as a result of the new coronavirus, with 3,851 new infections.

Italy confirmed on Sunday that 756 more people have died as a result of the new coronavirus, with 3,851 new infections.

The total in the country is now 97,689, with a total of 10,779 dead with from the new virus, the highest death toll in the world/

At a daily briefing it was also announced 646 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 13,030.

Speaking at the news conference, pulmonologist Luca Richeld was slightly optimistic due to significant decrease of deaths during this weekend.

"Looking to the numbers of this weekend, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (respectively) 27, 28 and 29 (March), looking at the harshest number which is for sure the number of deaths, we went from 969 to 889 to 756", he said.

"Now, these are big changes, in order of 10/15% per day, and are reflecting the fact that the health system is answering back and of the efficacy of the measures taken," Richeldi said.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
