Italy's number of new confirmed coronavirus cases continued to drop on Tuesday, with 3,039 new cases in a 24-hour period.

The country has not seen a daily count so low since the early weeks of the outbreak.

This came as Italy entered its fifth week in lockdown, in which businesses have stayed shut and people's movement restricted.

The upcoming Easter holidays will be a test of Italians' continued obedience of the far-reaching stay-at-home order.

Italy has confirmed 135,586 cases of the new virus and 17,127 deaths.

It remains the country with the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in the world.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
