Japan's prime minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday congratulated Syukuro Manabe, one of this year's three winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Kishida praised what he described as Manabe's "pioneering work" on global warming.

Manabe, originally from Japan, won the prize for work that found order in seeming disorder, helping to explain and predict complex forces of nature, including our understanding of climate change.

The 90-year-old meteorologist studied at the University of Tokyo before moving to the United States.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said Manabe's award brought the number of Nobel Prize winners from Japan to 28.

He promised to strengthen his country's research credentials, saying the government would "nuture young, creative researchers".
