President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in an interview with a British news channel on September 22 said that a no-deal Brexit will lead to the return of hard border on the island of Ireland. The EU President hit out on British MPs for forgetting Irish history when peace was brought to Ireland by the Good Friday Agreement. Furthermore, he warned British MPs that if a hard border did return history would be back immediately. He added that he would not be the architect of no-deal but the bloc would have to act to protect its citizens' health and safety.

EU not responsible for consequences of no-deal Brexit

Speaking on behalf of the European Union, Juncker said that the EU would not be responsible for the tensions rising between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which is likely to flare after Britain's exit. He added that Brexit is a sovereign decision of Britain and EU was in no way affecting its decision. He further said that it was the UK which was leaving the EU and not EU which is leaving out on the UK.

Speaking about the consequences Juncker said a big 'yes' to the hard border wall on Ireland which would be a result of no-deal Brexit on October 31. He also clarified that he or the European Union were not the architects of the upcoming border, but rather it was up to Britain to inform the EU about the architectural nature of the border. Juncker said that he did not like or want a hard border once again after Good Friday Agreement of peace between British and Irish government and the formation of the European Union which settled things further, earlier. Attacking the MPs, Juncker said that he feels people are forgetting the harsh history cause it will be back immediately once the borders are up. He averted the notion of criticism by saying that he has the highest possible respect for Westminister.

Boris on Ireland border and no-deal

In 2018, British media got hold of a leaked cabinet letter from the then foreign secretary Boris Johnson saying that it was wrong to see the task as maintaining no border in Ireland post-Brexit. He added that the British Government would try to stop the border's hardening. Johnson, who now serves as the Prime Minister of Britain announced that Britain is aiming for a Brexit deal but will leave the European Union with or without a deal on Halloween. One of the possible ways of avoiding a hard border is to keep Northern Ireland closely aligned with the EU in certain areas while creating a border with Great Britain in the Irish Sea. Yet it will not work as many Northern Ireland unionists and British officials do not seek such an arrangement.
