People on streets in the Peruvian capital Lima are organizing soup kitchens to feed their neighbours as they cope with unemployment as a result of the coronavirus lockdown.

Residents of Los Alamos settlement cooked a big pot for all the neighbors in need on Monday, now a daily practice for them since they created the soup kitchen a month ago.

Most of the residents work odd jobs and live on a daily income basis, and have found themselves unable to feed their families.

Peru is now under its second month of lockdown, after the government imposed it on March 16, restricting all activities except banks, food markets and pharmacies.

According to figures released on May by the Peruvian government, well over a million people in Lima have lost their jobs in the past couple of months.

As of Monday, Peru has recorded close to 120,000 COVID-19 cases and 3,456 deaths.
