London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on the 75th anniversary of its liberation.

He met the director of the Auschwitz museum Piotr Cywiński, and Renee Salt, a 90-year-old survivor of the camp who had travelled from London to take part in commemorations.

Salt was 15-years-old when she arrived at the camp with her parents in 1944.

She was separated from her father immediately after arriving by train, and never saw him again.

After spending two weeks at Auschwitz during that year, Salt and her mother were transferred to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where they were eventually released. Her mother died 12 days later.

Salt, who now resides in North London, has revisited the camp several times but the 75th anniversary trip was thought to be her last.

During the visit, the London Mayor showed her a donor wall at the camp which listed all the countries and cities which had donated money to the Auschwitz-Birkenau foundation.

She was later due to take part in a special ceremony attended by Duchess of Cornwall.
