German chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday said that Germany's new coronavirus figures meant that stricter measures may not become necessary, but added that it was important to not to indulge in "a false sense of security", urging people to remain disciplined in respecting restrictions on public life over Easter.

Germany has shut schools, bars, most shops and other facilities, and also has banned gatherings of more than two people in public. Those restrictions are set to remain in place at least through April 19, and Merkel plans to discuss with state governors on Wednesday how to proceed.

There are increasing calls in Germany for an exit strategy from the restrictions, but Merkel said that Germans should remain focused on following restrictions so as not to undermine what the country has achieved.Germany has confirmed 113,296 infections with COVID-19 and over 2,300 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Worldwide, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has climbed to nearly 1.5 million, with nearly 90,000 deaths. For most, the virus causes mild to moderate symptoms like fever and cough. But for some, especially older adults and the infirm, it can cause pneumonia. More than 330,000 people have recovered.
