German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday the country's latest coronavirus figures give grounds for "cautious optimism" but the situation is "fragile".

She said the country must remain concentrated in the fight against the virus and urged people to stay disciplined and respect restrictions over the Easter weekend.

Germany has shut schools, bars, most shops and other facilities, and also has banned gatherings of more than two people in public. Those restrictions are set to remain in place at least through until April 19.Germany has confirmed more than 113,000 coronavirus infections, including over 2,300 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
