"To take the victims beyond the altar"

Activist and journalist, Frida Guerrera, stated that the main aim for the demonstration taking place on the Day of the Dead was to take the victims beyond the altar. She further added that the women killed, did not die from natural causes or due to an illness but were separated from their families. So it was the right time to make them known to everyone around them. Frida did not want them to stay in the background of the Day of the Dead celebrations.

Guerrera stated that the demonstrators were asking for a real interest on the part of the concerned officials in order to acknowledge the issue of gender violence. She added that she was happy that Mexico has signed the European Union and the United Nations-sponsored Spotlight initiative, which was started to put an end to the violence against women and girls. Although the activist said that the path of progress in terms of eliminating violence in her country had been slow.
