South Korean President Moon Jae-in said his country will work with the international community to create clean and safe fusion energy by 2050.

His comments came as assembly began on the world's largest nuclear fusion reactor on Tuesday in the south of France.

South Korea is part of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) consortium along with Japan, India, the European Union, the United States, Russia and China.

In a pre-recorded video message, which was shot to celebrate the beginning of the assembly of the nuclear fusion reactor, Moon said South Korea will provide support by enabling talented scientists and engineers to participate in the programme.

The new ITER reactor will be the first fusion device to produce net energy, maintain fusion for long periods of time and test the integrated technologies, materials, and physics regimes necessary for the commercial production of fusion-based electricity, according to the consortium.
