A senior North Korean military official reportedly claimed that the United States and South Korea must produce new solutions for the current standoff on the Korean Peninsula. He further warned that the hostile policies towards Pyongyang would lead to serious consequences. Earlier this month North Korea also threatened on ending the freeze on long-range missile testing. The Vice Minister of the People's Armed Forces, Kim Hyong Ryong also addressed the halted bilateral relations between the two countries and blamed the US and the South Korean government for the 'dangerous, vicious cycle' of tensions.

Mr. Kim said, “Though it has been more than one year since the DPRK-U.S. joint statement was adopted, there is no progress in improving bilateral relations between the two countries, completely because of the U.S.’ anachronistic, hostile policies against the DPRK.”

He further added, “Bearing in mind our firm will to safeguard peace in the region, the United States and the South Korean authorities must refrain from any actions disrupting the stability of the situation and come up with a new way for solving the problem.”

'Concrete steps'

North Korea has also conducted missile tests in recent months and broke-off the latest nuclear talks with the US in early October. The United Nations Security Council reportedly raised the issue of recent weapon tests in North Korea to which they replied saying that their patience has a limit and that the nation is reconsidering its step to build trust with the US. Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry has also threatened to resume its nuclear tests along with those of long-range missiles. They accused US of influencing members of the UNSC after a breakdown in negotiations between North Korea and the US.

The European members reportedly asked North Korea to take concrete steps towards ending their programs involving nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. This came after North Korea test-fired a brand new submarine-launched ballistic missile. The ballistic missile has been denoted as the most provocative action by the country since 2018.
