A Palestinian official on Wednesday rejected US President Donald Trump's plan aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an interview with the AP in Ramallah, Palestinian Liberation Organisation executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi said the blueprint was ''a very cynical exploitation of a very tragic situation of occupation and violations of Palestinian rights."

The plan largely adopts the Israeli position on many issues of the decades-old conflict, from borders and the status of Jerusalem to security measures and the fate of Palestinian refugees.

It would create a small, disjointed Palestinian state in the West Bank and allow Israel to annex nearly all the Jewish settlements in the territory.

Palestinians are seeking the West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war, as part of a future independent state.

Most of the international community considers Israel's West Bank settlements illegal under international law.
