Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday he would do his utmost to gather information on what appeared to be a ballistic missile launch by North Korea.

"I will do my utmost to collect and analyze information and provide prompt and accurate information to the people," he said.

Kishida added that officials were checking the safety of ships and aircraft around Japan, but there were no immediate reports of disruption or damage.

He said it was "extremely regrettable" that North Korea was continuing to fire missiles despite international concern over another launch six days ago, when Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile into the sea.

The North said that launch was a successful test of a hypersonic missile, a type of weaponry it claimed to have first tested in September.
