PM Modi in Vladivostok: Read lesser known facts about the Russian city

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Russian city of Vladivostok for a two-day visit. It is rich in various natural resources and is well connected to Asia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday morning, reached the Russian city of Vladivostok, for a two-day visit. This is PM Modi's third bilateral visit to Russia. The visit is one of its kind as no other Indian Prime Minister has ever visited the Far East region of Russia that received the status of a city in May 1880.

PM Modi, while talking about his visit to the Russian city, said that the objective of his visit is two-fold. He’s going to be the chief guest at the 5th Eastern Economic Forum at the invitation of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and is also going to hold the 20th India-Russia Annual Summit with him. He also said that the Forum focuses on the development of business and investment opportunities in the Russian Far East region. It presents enormous potential for developing close and mutually beneficial cooperation between India and Russia in this region.

Vladivostok, which is known to be the leading centre for education and science is home to the Primorsky Scientific Centre of the Far Eastern division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, dozens of institutions of higher education, R&D organizations, the Botanical Garden-Institute, and the largest and most modern university campuses in Russia.

The Far East region is rich in natural resources

The Russian city, which is rich in petroleum, coal and grain, exports it to various parts of the world. It is also well connected to major Asian cities like Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo. The city thrives with fluctuating temperatures with seasonal bifurcations. The average January temperature being -14 degrees and the average August temperature being +24 degrees.

In 1860, the Russian military post named Vladivostok was set up in the Golden Horn Bay of the Sea of Japan, after the signing of the Treaty of Aigun between Russia and China. By the 20th century, it had become the most significant Russian port and naval base in the Far East.

The Russian city became the cultural, scientific and industrial centre of the Far East during the Soviet period. Machinery manufacturing, shipbuilding and repair, production of construction materials and fishing equipment, food, consumer goods manufacturing and woodworking industries also flourished during the time and some of the world-famous universities and museums opened in the city. 

PM Modi, in his departure statement, also said that the two countries enjoy excellent relations based on the strong foundation of Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Both countries cooperate extensively in the strategic fields of defence, civil nuclear energy and peaceful uses of space. He also spoke about the robust and growing trade and investment relations between the two countries.
