Pope Francis on Tuesday prayed for those who were unjustly convicted despite being innocent during his morning mass, a few hours after the acquittal of his close aide, Cardinal Pell, over accusations of sexual crimes.

Conducting mass from his Santa Marta residence inside the Vatican Pope Francis said: "I would like to pray today for all the people who suffer an unjust judgment for the persecution. Don't give the power of my enemies, against me fake witnesses and people who inspire violence."

Cardinal George Pell had been the most senior Catholic originally found guilty of sexually abusing children and spent 13 months in prison.

On Tuesday Australia's highest court cleared him of child sex crimes after finding there was reasonable doubt surrounding the testimony of a witness.
