A group of protesters in Montenegro blocked a road and scuffled with police in anger over the detention of eight Serbian Orthodox Church priests accused of violating health regulations during the coronavirus outbreak by organising a procession.

The procession in the western town of Niksic on Tuesday was lead by the priests and attended by a few thousand people.

Those participating in the march did not wear face masks nor keep distance from each other.

Some scuffled with police, who used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

State television said three people were arrested.

A country of 620,000 people, Montenegro has reported nine deaths caused by the new coronavirus and more than 300 infections.
