The Irish government has announced sweeping restrictions to try to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has ordered people to stay at home until April 12 in a significant crackdown on social liberties.

Exceptions include travelling to work, food shopping and vital family visits.

Footage from Sky showed usually bustling pubs in the capital Dublin closed up and empty on Friday.

On Friday another 302 positive tests were confirmed, bringing the total number of infections in Ireland to 2,121, including 22 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
