Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the country's coronavirus situation was becoming "more difficult."

Speaking in a conference call with Cabinet officials, Putin said there had been 2,777 confirmed cases in the country, according to the latest figures.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said the increase in confirmed cases was due to the country expanding its testing.

She said that Russia had conducted more than 460,000 coronavirus tests in total.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
