The Russian Athletics Federation (RusAF) has avoided expulsion from World Athletics after Russian Minister of Sport, Oleg Matytsin, guaranteed to pay an outstanding fine of $6.31 million (£5 million/€5.6 million) by 15th August.

The pledge came after the World Athletics Council decided on Thursday to expel the Russian Federation if it did not make the outstanding payments by that August deadline.

Russia were also told however that if all requirements were not met by December 2020, a Congress would be called to confirm expulsion, with no appeal allowed.

Council chairman Rune Andersen said that the taskforce had seen "very little in terms of changing the culture of Russian athletics" in the past five years in the wake of the doping crisis which has surrounded the sport in Russia.

Their suspension has been renewed more than a dozen times since 2015.
