Members of the Russian military medical team disinfected hospitals in Belgrade amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

The Russian defence ministry said 11 military cargo planes were sent to deliver equipment and infection experts.

Russia has maintained close political and economic ties with Serbia and provided it with weapons in the past.

Russian officials have angrily rejected claims that the Kremlin was seeking political gains by providing medical aid to Italy and other countries.

Serbia has reported a total of 58 deaths and 2,200 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection as of Monday.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
