Scientist Mahmoud Ghannoum has been telling a story for the past 30 years about a generous act by a stranger in Washington who made his life possible. He is trying to find the stranger, so he can finally say, 'Thank you'. The scientist was in trouble when the fateful encounter took place in 1990. His country, Kuwait, had been invaded by Saddam Hussein and was in scorched-earth ruin and his young family was squatting in a dorm room in England while he was trying to find work and a way to get them all to America.

Trip to Washington

Ghannoum had agreed to speak at a science conference in Washington and had made those plans months before. He never thought that things would change but Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990. Afif Ghannoum, the scientist's oldest son was 10 when he watched the invasion of his homeland on television, he claimes that the fear is still seared in him and he still remembers the look on his parent's face. All their assets were frozen, they didn't know if their home would survive the invasion.

Ghannoum's trip to Washington was the key to a new life for his family in America. He printed out his resume, borrowed a suit and flew to America. He had two days to make connections and find himself a job. The scientist was reportedly told to wait in Washington DC for a week but it was impossible for him as he had no money even for him to buy food. There was no way his family could have transferred money or help him in any way.

The travel agent

While walking from the conference room at the Willard Hotel and trying to come up with a plan, he stopped at a travel agency and asked the guy who was standing behind the counter if he could somehow reroute it to Milwaukee as one of Ghannoum's family friend stayed there and could help him. The scientist told his story to the agent and how he was facing problems. The travel agent didn't turn him away, didn't suspect a scam. He bought Ghannoum a round-trip ticket to Milwaukee, returning to D.C. in time to meet with prospective employers. The scientist met with all the hiring people and got two job offers. Ghannoum claimed that it all happened because of the kindness of the travel agent. It happened back in 1990 but since then the scientist is trying to find the travel agent so that he could return him the money and thank him.
