The transplant team at a Chinese hospital had to reject the lungs donated by a man who died because they were blackened after decades of smoking. The lungs were removed by Doctor Chen Jingyu along with the transplant team at Wuxi's People Hospital in the Jiangsu Province, China after the patient died. However, the doctor had no choice but to reject the lungs as the man used to smoke an entire pack of cigarettes every day for 30 years to destroy the original pink-colour of healthy lungs. The chain-smoker died just at the age of 52 and his organs for put for donation. The reasons cited by doctors included lung calcification, bullous lung disease, and pulmonary emphysema, all of which are caused by heavy use of tobacco.

'Heavy smoker'

Dr Chen posted the video on social media saying many smokers around the world carry such lungs inside their body and therefore if a person is 'heavy-smoker', their lungs will be rejected. The doctor further asks the people to just look at the lungs he posted and then find the courage to smoke. Reportedly, while talking to the local media, Dr Chen said that the patient did not undergo any CT scan before his death because he was declared brain dead, shortly after which his lungs were donated. The initial index tests of oxygenation were alright but when the organs were harvested they were not in the condition to be used again.

Shocking results of survey

A study for China's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018 found that nearly 26.6 per cent of the country's population over the age of 15 smoke. In 2017, the World Health Organisation also reported that tobacco causes nearly seven million deaths every year, worldwide. Just last year, another video shocked the people where two lungs were shown next to each other, one of a 'non-smoker' and other being the one who smokes every day. The lungs of people who have never smoked in their life are bright pink coloured however, a smokers' lungs almost resemble a pile of charcoal.
