Singapore's Airlines have reportedly launched a farm-to-plane cuisine where the business class passengers can enjoy a fresh treat on the 19-hour Newark to Singapore route. The Airline has partnered with AeroFarms which is an indoor farm where food is produced in vertically stacked layers. The idea was reportedly introduced about two years ago with a two-fold purpose where the airlines wanted to reduce their carbon footprint by using hyper-local produce. The food and beverage director, Antony McNeil claimed that the airline wanted the in-flight food to taste more vibrant as possible and AeroFarms was a great fit.

The environmentally responsible farm

The AeroFarms was founded in 2004 with a mission to transform agriculture by building and operating environmentally responsible farms throughout the world to enable local production at scale and nourish the communities with safe, nutritious, and delicious food. The company grows its produce year-round in a room with 40-foot-tall ceilings using LED lights and cloth made from recycled water bottles. The official site of AeroFarms further claimes that instead of watering, AeroFarms farmers mist the roots of everything that grows that allows around 700 varieties of fruits and vegetables to be harvested in 10 to 14 days. The partnership with Singapore Airlines is the latest venture for the farm, which was launched on October 1.

Farm-to-plane initiative

Singapore's head of US communications James Boyd claims that the greens for the airlines had been earlier had to fly in from 3,000 miles away from California, Mexico, or Florida but as the environmentally responsible farm is just five-miles-away from the airport, it allows to source greens faster and fresher. He further added that the venture also helps in cutting down on shipping waste. Singapore is also reportedly planning to expand the farm-to-plane initiative with similar sustainable urban farms around the world. However, Singapore Airlines are not the only airlines to provide fresh food as Turkish Airline, for one, cook eggs and steak for its business class passengers.
