Singapore on Friday announced expansive new restriction measures aimed at curbing increases of infections of the new coronavirus in the country.

Most workplaces, except for essential services and key economic sectors, will be closed from next Tuesday, and schools will be closed from Wednesday.

Essential services such as food establishments, markets and supermarkets, clinics, hospitals, utilities, transport and banking services will remain open, but the public will be urged to stay home to help prevent transmissions.

As of Thursday Singapore has a total of 1,049 cases of the virus, with five deaths - the country has seen a spike in new cases over the past two weeks, with a rise of more than 50 new cases daily.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
