President Tsai Ing-wen has once again appointed Morris Chang, former chair of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, to represent Taiwan's interests at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting.

The closed-door APEC meeting will be held by New Zealand authorities on Friday and will be online amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Tsai said Tuesday in Taipei that the meeting's objective is to boost health cooperation and revive the economy in the Asia-Pacific region.

"APEC countries should help each other so that vaccines are supplied quicker, with more stability," she said.

"This will enable us to control the pandemic more efficiently, which is helpful in reviving the economy."

Chang is the former chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world's biggest contract manufacturer of processor chips for smartphones and computers.
