A petrifying footage of a little girl vanishing into a manhole while walking with her mother in St. Petersburg, Russia has gone viral. The incident was captured in the nearby CCTV cameras which shows the lid of manhole was loosely fitted. As the toddler stepped on the manhole, it flipped forward under her weight and sent her plunging down.

Netizens express concern over dangerous manholes
Her mother and some passerby rushed to the spot to rescue and lifted her out of the manhole.
According to reports, the child had fallen into a sewer. However, it was unclear if the manhole was for sewage, drainage or water supplies. Reportedly, Tatarstan police checking the incident, amid uncertainty where exactly it had taken place.
The 15-second footage went viral and many netizens praised the mother's timely action. On the other hand, the netizens also expressed their concerns about dangerous and life-threatening manholes and urged the authorities to change their defective lids.

Life-claiming manhole in Nalasopara
In a similar incident, a six-year-old boy died after he fell into a manhole on Wednesday in the Nalasopara area of Palghar district near Mumbai. His body was recovered on Wednesday night. The child had fallen into an open nullah in Nalasopara in the evening. The manhole was left open due to flooding in the area owing to heavy rains.
