Romania's eastern town of Suceava was placed under quarantine on Tuesday to limit the spread of the new coronavirus.

Along with the municipality, eight surrounding communes are also being quarantined.

Approximately a quarter of the cases in Romania are located in the area, the minister of Internal Affairs Ion Marcel Vela said on Monday.

Suceava has an estimated population of 120,000 people and has registered almost 600 COVID-19 cases.

In the country's capital Bucharest, local authorities were disinfecting the streets.

Authorities have imposed stricter movement measures from last week and Bucharest saw military personnel on the streets to supplement police and gendarmerie forces

Meanwhile, trucks waited in a queue measuring several kilometres at the southern Romanian border with Bulgaria at the Giurgiu border crossing, with drivers saying they expected to spend most of the day waiting to cross.

Romania has recorded 2,245 coronavirus infections and 69 deaths.

A state of emergency was declared in the country on 16 March.
