People rushed to grocery and convenience stores in parts of Turkey causing long queues after the government announced a two day curfew in 31 cities to help curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

An Interior Ministry statement said all residents of Istanbul, Ankara and 29 other cities will be barred from leaving homes from Friday at midnight (2100GMT) until Sunday night.

The ban came amid concerns that with the hot weather forecast over the weekend, many would ignore the government advice to stay at home.

Turkey has so far avoided a national lockdown but has ordered anyone above the age of 65 or below the age of 20 to remain at home. While many schools and businesses were closed, most of the offices remain open and workers continue to go to work.

Turkey's COVID-19 death toll has passed the 1,000 mark while the number of infections in the country reached 47,029.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and can lead to death.
