Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday said the phased reopening of schools was "crucial," as he confirmed the UK would enter phase two of the UK's lockdown easing strategy at the start of June.

Pupils in reception, year 1 and year 6 will return on June 1, and pupils facing exams in years 10 and 12 will have "some contact" from June 15.

Speaking at a London briefing, Johnson said social-distancing will be encouraged by reducing class sizes and staggering breaks and school-run times.

He also announced that testing will be made available to "all children and staff and their families" if they display symptoms.

The prime minister said the UK currently has 259,559 confirmed cases and 36,793 deaths - an increase of 118 fatalities since yesterday.
