UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed an open debate on diversity, state building and the search for peace in the Security Council Tuesday.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded inequalities, and reversed development and peace building gains. These inequalities and weak governance structures create a vacuum that is easily filled by the voices of intolerance and extremism that can lead to violent conflict," the Secretary-General told delegates.
Speaking to reporters at the U.N. on Tuesday, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, said, "many countries today seem unable to manage diversity. We have built a global system that increases divisions between, but also within nations. A system that believes there are races or genders which are inferior, or superior, or religions that are closer to God than others."
Kenya currently holds the presidency of the U.N. Security Council, a post that rotates monthly, one reason why Kenyatta is in the United States.
Kenya also has been relatively vocal among African nations on the war in Ethiopia.
