Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on October 9 that the Kremlin doesn't feel that the cases against the members of the unapproved rallies that swept Moscow this summer were politically motivated. Unapproved rallies geared up Moscow in July and August after the decision of the city's election commission to banish a few opposition candidates from taking part in the city council election occurred on September 8. Some protestors have faced criminal charges. Demonstrators requested a stop to suppression against anti-government lawmakers.

Around 1,700 people were detained from the rallies

Around 1,700 people were detained by the police from the protest marches. While a few protestors have dealt with criminal charges, others have been vindicated. At least 20,000 individuals marched in central Moscow demanding the release of political detainees. A few opposition activists are in prison after month-long protests that started a brutal crackdown on dissent by the Kremlin. Thousands of protestors on Sunday chanted "Let them go" during a widespread protest in central Moscow demanding the release of opposition activists jailed recently for dissent.

The majority of the protests are against the government

A report says Russia’s use of arrests, long jail terms and pressure on activists appears to be having little effect on anti-government protests. In the first six months of 2019, there were 863 protests nationwide, the report said. By the end of the year, the total will probably be more than 2,000. The majority of the protests are against the government and law enforcement offices composed to challenge ecological damage or cuts in government help. The anti-government protests have yet to affect two regions of the nation Chukotka, a mostly roadless area of north-eastern Russia, and Chechnya, which has been under the rule of Ramzan Kadyrov since 2005. The new survey looked only in the initial months of 2019. It did not take note of any of the large anti-government protests that have occurred since last July. The Russian government appears unable to stop the protest movement from growing.
