US First Lady Jill Biden arrived in Ecuador on Wednesday for the first leg of her trip to Latin America.

Biden is also scheduled to visit Costa Rica and Panama later this week.

Her trip is meant to serve as a warm up of sorts for a gathering of leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean being held June 6-10 in Los Angeles.

The week long Summit of the Americas is a key part of President Joe Biden's outreach to a region that increasingly is being courted by US adversaries, such as China and Russia.

Throughout the trip, Jill Biden will highlight US support for programs that help children, women and young people across the countries on her itinerary, according to her schedule.
