US imposes travel sanctions on Cuba's Interior Minister Julio Ceaser Gandarilla Bermejo

Travel sanctions were imposed on Cuban Interior Minister Julio Cesar Gandarilla by Trump administration after his involvement in human rights violations

Another round of travel sanctions was imposed on Cuban Interior Minister Julio Cesar Gandarilla Bermejo by the Trump administration on November 16. The required steps were taken to put pressure on the Cuban official for his involvement in the violations of human rights in Venezuela and to restrict Havana’s support for Venezuela’s socialist president. 

The US imposed travel sanctions on Cuban Interior Minister

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a public statement said that ‘The Department is publicly designating Julio Cesar Gandarilla Bermejo, Minister of Cuba's Ministry of the Interior (MININT), under Section 7031(c) of the FY 2019 Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, as carried forward by the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2020, due to his involvement, by command responsibility, in gross violations of human rights in Venezuela’.

The US calls for international action against human rights violation

The official account of the statement was published by the US Department of State, asking other countries to join the United States in fighting violations of human rights in Venezuela. The statement read that the Secretary of State has authentic information about the Government officials of other countries who are involved in corruption and gross violations of human rights and according to the laws, these officials along with their family members should be banned from entering the United States. It further read the Cuban Interior Minister is responsible for arresting and detaining several Cuban citizens and political prisoners.

The United States to support democracy in Cuba and Venezuela

According to the Statement, the United States extended its support to the people of Cuba and Venezuela who are suffering from the repression of the Castro regime. The continuous violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms has triggered deep worldwide concerns and call for an international call. ‘ We strongly encourage other governments and international organizations to demand accountability of the Cuban government for violating and abusing human rights and fundamental freedoms,’ the statement read. Mike Pompeo also posted on Twitter criticizing the Interior Minister and at the same time holding him accountable.
