The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was washed on Monday as municipal workers splashed disinfectant and hosed the iconic church with water, part of an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The church is revered by Christians as the site of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

A 12th-century building sitting on 4th-century remains, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, is the only place where six Christian denominations practice their faith at the same site.

In Israel, more than 4,300 people have contracted coronavirus and 15 have died.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
