A famous sculpture of a giant pumpkin on the Japanese island of Naoshima has been damaged by a typhoon.

Yayoi Kusama's yellow polka dot pumpkin sculpture, measuring two metres, was knocked off its base by strong waves on Monday.

It was found washed ashore in Kagawa prefecture.

The pumpkin was retrieved from the sea but it's uncertain when it will be put back on its pedestal as some parts of the artwork are cracked and repairs are needed.

The sculpture has been a major sightseeing attraction on the Japanese island since it was installed in 1994.
