Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland Micheal Martin says Russia's brutal invasion of neighboring Ukraine and revelations that its troops have committed horrific atrocities in occupied territories show that the world's largest country is be having like a rogue state.

Martin also condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime efforts to conduct a referendum in occupied Ukraine territory, saying the measure is essentially a land grab that violates the U.N. Charter.

Martin made the comments in his address to the U.N. General Assembly.

He condemned Russia's invasion, saying its impact is felt far beyond European borders by countries that rely in grain imports from the two nations that are now dealing with rising food shortages and prices.

Rising global inflation combined with severe and erratic weather spawned by climate change are making the situation worse for the world economies.

Martin also lamented stalled Middle East peace efforts.

He reaffirmed Ireland's commitment to a two-state solution with a viable Palestinian state based on 1967 borders living in peace and security alongside the state of Israel, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.

That goal, he noted, is being undermined by growing number of Israeli settlements on occupied land that are fueling despair among Palestinians.

"Israeli settlement building continues to undermine – it would seem knowingly and deliberately – the viability and territorial contiguity of a ... for the Palestinian state and to jeopardize the two-state solution. Settlements are a clear violation of international law and today stand in the way of a just lasting and comprehensive peace. Let us be clear: the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is untenable. We cannot, and must not, become inured to it," Martin told the General Assembly.
