Argentine opposition groups gathered at the central Buenos Aires Obelisk on Saturday to protest against the justice reform project announced by President Alberto Fernández.

The protesters spoke out against former president and now Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who is being investigated by several federal judges for crimes that allegedly took place during her time in office, 2007-2015.

Fernández unveiled his justice reform initiative on Wednesday saying its goal was to achieve a more agile justice, "independent of political power", with great transparency.

Opponent believe its actual aim is to shield Fernández de Kirchner and for officials of her administration who are also being investigated with impunity.

One of the points of the new legislation which has generated the most controversy is the presence of Carlos Beraldi, lawyer for the vice president in cases of alleged corruption, in a council of eleven jurists who will advise on the reform and operation of the system.

Fernández de Kirchner faces numerous formal investigations into allegations of money laundering and criminal association.

She also faces trial on charges that she covered up the role of Iranians alleged to be tied to a 1994 terrorist bombing at a Buenos Aires Jewish centre that killed 85 people.
