Two days before the constitutional plebiscite in Chile, around 200 people gathered to protest in the capital Santiago. Police tried to quickly dissolve the demonstration with tear gas and water cannons on Friday.

Clashes with Carabineros personnel continued in the central area of Santiago.

Demonstrators were considerable fewer than previous Fridays, and far from the thousands of people that started the protests in October 2019, when the government increased the price of subway ticket fares.

People then protested against social inequality, the state and access to healthcare and education, demands that evolved into the plebiscite to vote for a change of the constitution.

On Sunday, 14.8 million people will be asked if the constitution should be replaced; and secondly, if the current Congress or other citizens should write the new text.
