UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that it was necessary to "massively ramp up tests" to combat the spread of the new coronavirus in the kingdom.

Speaking from Downing Street Nr. 10 where Johnson is currently under quarantine, he said it had been a "sad, sad day" as the UK saw its biggest day-to-day rise yet in deaths from the coronavirus.

The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
